The Bay-an Journal: A Small Tribute in Seven Copies

There are artists whose work speaks, and there are those whose life becomes part of the story of a place. Roland Bay-an is both.

A pioneering figure in the Cordillera art scene and one of the founding members of the Pasakalye Group of Artists, Mr. Bay-an has, for decades, painted not just landscapes but layers of culture, memory, and quiet strength. At 72, he continues to create, reflecting the same calm dedication that has marked his journey since the beginning.

His paintings are often quiet—earthy, muted, and reflective. He doesn’t use loud or bright colors. Instead, his palette mirrors the land he comes from: soft greens, warm browns, grays—the kinds of tones you see in mountain shadows, soil, stone, and the everyday lives of people. His subjects are sometimes houses, sometimes mountains, sometimes faces—but always with a stillness that invites pause.

Recently, Mr. Bay-an faced a serious health challenge. After being diagnosed with an aneurysm, his doctors advised against surgery due to the risks at his age. Instead, he now follows a daily medication and monitoring routine—an ongoing journey of care and healing. He remains deeply grateful to the community that has supported him, including friends and fellow artists who’ve rallied through fundraising efforts and creative projects.

Each Bay-an Journal features a printed sketch by Mr. Bay-an on the cover—a quiet drawing of a man in profile—and includes his personal signature inside. These small details make each copy unique and meaningful.

This project is our quiet tribute to a man who has shaped much of the Cordillera’s creative landscape. It is also a way to continue supporting his ongoing medical needs and recovery.

Thank you for supporting this tribute.
